Privacy policy

Emnu is a nutrition journal. You say what you ate, and Emnu turns it into food entries with calories and macros. This page explains what data that involves, where it goes, and what you can do about it.

What Emnu stores

• The meals you log: the text you typed or said, the foods Emnu recognised, servings, calories and macros, and the time.
• Your weights and the date you logged them.
• Your targets and preferences: calories, macros, weight unit, goal weight, and whether you weigh food raw or cooked.
• An anonymous account identifier created on your device. No name, email or phone number is required to use Emnu.

Where it goes

Your journal is stored in a database hosted by Supabase, protected so that only your own account can read or write your rows.

AI, and what is shared with OpenAI

Emnu uses OpenAI, an AI company, to read meals and write the weekly review. Before anything is sent, the app shows what is sent and to whom, and asks you to tap Allow. If you choose Not now, nothing is sent to OpenAI. You can turn this off at any time in the app under You → AI with OpenAI.

• Meal text. When you log a meal, the words you typed or dictated, and whether you weigh food raw or cooked, are sent from Emnu’s server to OpenAI’s API to turn them into foods, portions, calories and macros.
• Meal photos. When you take or attach a photo of a meal, the photo is sent from Emnu’s server to OpenAI’s API with anything you typed, to recognise the foods and estimate portions. Only the photos you add to a meal are sent; Emnu never reads your photo library. Emnu’s server does not store the photo.
• Weekly review. When you open the weekly review, Emnu’s server sends OpenAI the numbers from the last five weeks that the review is written from: your weigh-ins, daily calorie and macro totals, your plan and targets, and the names of your five most-logged foods.
• Cloud voice. Only if you switch voice to Cloud and allow it: audio from the microphone is streamed to OpenAI for transcription while the microphone is open. Emnu does not store the audio. The default, on-device voice keeps audio on your iPhone.

Your name, email and account identifier are never sent to OpenAI. Emnu uses OpenAI’s API with storage turned off. Under OpenAI’s API data terms, OpenAI uses this data only to provide the service to Emnu, does not use it to train its models, and keeps it for no more than 30 days for abuse monitoring before deleting it. OpenAI is bound by a data processing agreement to protect this data at least as well as this policy does.

Analytics

Emnu records product events such as “meal logged” or “weight logged” with PostHog, hosted in the EU, so we can see which parts of the app are used and fix what breaks. These events do not contain the text of your meals, your weights or any nutrition values.

Feedback

If you send feedback in the app, we store your message, optional reply email, account identifier and app version in Supabase. The Emnu team uses this information to review your feedback and reply if you provide an email. Your journal is not attached to your message. Deleting your account and data in the app also deletes these feedback submissions.

Purchases

Subscriptions are handled by Apple through the App Store. Emnu uses RevenueCat to check whether your subscription is active. RevenueCat receives your anonymous account identifier and purchase receipt data from Apple, and nothing from your journal.

What Emnu does not do

• Sell or share your data with advertisers.
• Rank you against other people or make your data visible to anyone else.
• Give medical advice. Nutrition values are estimates from food databases and language models and can be wrong.

Deleting your data

In the app, open You and choose “Delete account and data”. Every meal, weight and setting is removed from our servers immediately and cannot be recovered. You can also email us and we will delete it for you.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the app will tell you on next launch.
